Context

Connections between the urban and climate fields are still to be further developed. However, urban centers contribute significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at the same time as they are the scene of extreme weather events and increasingly disastrous consequences. According to UN-Habitat data, urban areas are responsible for 70% of GHG emissions, and 64% of their population is already highly exposed to disasters resulting from climate change. Therefore, the interconnection between the two fields is necessary and urgent.

It is from this context that social movements and civil society organizations working in the urban field are coming to COP 30, mobilizing to promote and guarantee the right to the city and climate justice, with the aim of bringing the demands that run through the daily lives of the most vulnerable groups in our cities: women, racialized groups, those residing in peripheries, low-income groups, informal and/or care workers, among others.

Thus, this Plenary is mobilized by and for these urban movements and organizations before the start of the People’s Summit, seeking to articulate narratives and advocacy strategies, empower demands from local communities and weave new bonds of cooperation and partnership between actors in the urban field.

Bring your banners, position papers, declarations and materials to share in this moment of collective struggle and resistance!
