Established in 1986, the Development Action Group (DAG) is a leading non-profit, non-governmental organisation. DAG’s mission is to create, implement and support community-centred developments in order to address economic, social and spatial inequalities. DAG has been at the forefront of urban development initiatives for more than 30 years. Established to resist apartheid spatial planning in the late 1980s, the organisation focus has been responsive to the ever widening socio spatial inequalities in South Africa cities. The current focus of a restructuring South African cities is encompassed in the concept of Re-imagining the City DAG’s impact in the urban sector over the past 30 years is attributed to the organisation role in unlocking development of 7,896 new low-cost houses; improved tenure security for 27,000 people; direct assistance in securing community services to 100 000 households in over 80 projects; secured and unlocked R270 million for housing projects; and strengthening capacity of more than 2,000 civic leaders, with a focus on women and youth.
